A crash that started out looking like a routine road death has just been reclassified into something far more serious.

A 43-year-old man has been re-arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder, days after a two-car collision on the B4696 near Royal Wootton Bassett in Wiltshire killed a woman in her 70s.

How the Case Escalated

Wiltshire Police initially arrested the man, the driver of a black Vauxhall Astra, on suspicion of death by dangerous driving and causing death while unfit through drink or drugs.

Following what police describe only as "initial enquiries," the force has now re-arrested him on suspicion of murder, a significant escalation from the original driving offences.

Detective Chief Inspector Phil Walker confirmed the collision "is now being treated as a murder investigation."

What Happened on the B4696

The crash involved an orange Peugeot 107 travelling northbound and the black Vauxhall Astra travelling southbound, colliding at around 6:05pm on 30 June.

The Peugeot's driver, a woman in her 70s, was declared dead at the scene.

A teenage girl who was a passenger in the Vauxhall suffered serious injuries and remains in hospital.

The Vauxhall's driver was taken to hospital for treatment following the crash before being taken into custody for questioning.

The Detail Police Haven't Fully Explained

Wiltshire Police has made a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct due to what the force described only as "previous involvement" with the suspect.

Neither the force nor the IOPC has detailed what that previous involvement was, or whether it relates directly to the events of 30 June.

That gap leaves an open question hanging over the case: whether police had prior knowledge of a risk this suspect posed before the fatal crash occurred.

What Police Are Asking For

Investigators want to hear from anyone with dashcam footage of a black Vauxhall Astra on Cricklade High Street, Purton High Street, or the surrounding area on 30 June.

DCI Walker said the victim's next of kin have been informed of the murder investigation and are being supported by specially trained officers.
