A stretch of Welsh countryside road has now recorded three deaths in under two weeks, and Friday's crash was the deadliest reminder yet.

A man died and two people were injured when a van and a coach collided on the A40 between Llandeilo and Nantgaredig, Carmarthenshire, at around 16:30 BST on Friday.

What Happened at the Scene

The crash involved a Scania coach and a Ford Transit van, according to Dyfed-Powys Police.

The van driver died at the scene, and his next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers.

The coach driver and a 14-year-old passenger travelling on board were taken to Glangwili Hospital in Carmarthen as a precaution, with injuries described as not believed to be life-threatening.

A small fire broke out immediately after the impact but was quickly brought under control by fire crews.

The Emergency Response

Emergency services, including an air ambulance, were called to the scene, with Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service attending to secure the vehicles.

Passersby who witnessed the immediate aftermath stopped to help those involved before emergency crews arrived.

The A40 was closed in both directions between Llandeilo and Nantgaredig, with the closure stretching from Carmarthen Road in Llandeilo down to Pentrefelin.

Diversions were put in place around the Dryslwyn area while specialist collision investigation teams carried out their work.

Part of a Deadlier Pattern

Friday's crash is the third fatal collision on Carmarthenshire's roads in less than a fortnight.

A motorcyclist died in a four-vehicle crash on the A40 between St Clears and Whitland on 21 June, and a 48-year-old man died in a collision between two motorcycles on the A4069 near Brynamman just days later.

Three fatal crashes on the county's roads within two weeks represents an unusually concentrated cluster, even accounting for the routine risks of rural single-carriageway driving.

Police have not suggested any link between the three incidents, but the pattern has renewed local attention on road safety along Carmarthenshire's A-roads.

What Police Are Asking For

Dyfed-Powys Police is appealing for anyone with information or relevant dashcam footage showing the crash to come forward.

Ffoshelig Coaches, the operator of the coach involved and a company that primarily services local schools in the Carmarthenshire area, declined to comment on the incident.
