Gareth Stephenson inquest after fatal A470 crash between Llanidloes and Llandinam.

A coroner has concluded that Gareth Stephenson died in a road traffic collision while under the influence of drugs.

Gareth Stephenson, 35, was killed after his Hyundai i10 collided with a lorry on the A470 between Llanidloes and Llandinam in Powys.

Pontypridd Coroner’s Court heard that he had been driving back toward Mid Wales from Manchester when the fatal crash happened on January 26, 2025.

Gareth Stephenson Inquest Confirms Crash Finding

The inquest heard Mr Stephenson was travelling toward Aberystwyth when his car clipped the kerb in wet conditions.

The vehicle then lost control, moved into the path of oncoming traffic, collided with a lorry and left the road.

Mr Stephenson, a shop assistant from Aberystwyth, suffered multiple traumatic injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Post-mortem tests later found illicit drugs in his system, which the inquest heard were likely to have impaired his driving.

Area coroner Patricia Morgan recorded a conclusion of road traffic collision while under the influence of drugs.

The A470 Journey Became Fatal in Wet Conditions

The crash happened during a long journey from Manchester to Mid Wales.

The court heard the road conditions were wet when the Hyundai clipped the kerb before entering the path of the lorry.

That sequence left the inquest focused on a narrow chain of events: road surface, vehicle control, drug impairment and the short distance between the kerb strike and the collision.

The coroner’s conclusion does not require speculation about intent.

It records how the death happened, based on the evidence heard in court, and places drug impairment inside the circumstances of the collision.

Dynasty Blake Remembered Beyond the Court Record

Mr Stephenson was also known in the Aberystwyth LGBTQ+ community as Dynasty Blake, a drag performer remembered for his warmth, humour and stage presence.

His family described him as someone who brought light into rooms and made people laugh through singing, dancing and performance.

Those tributes sit beside a difficult inquest finding.

The public record explains the crash. It does not reduce the person who died to the circumstances of his final journey.

That balance matters in cases involving toxicology evidence, because the factual cause of death and the life being remembered are both part of the record.

What the Inquest Leaves Behind

The medical cause of death was given as multiple traumatic injuries.

No separate criminal proceeding, charge or prosecution outcome was included in the inquest account.

The case now stands as a completed coroner’s finding rather than an open crash inquiry.

For family and friends, the conclusion does not soften the loss.

For the public record, it sets out the point at which a wet road, a long journey and drug-impaired driving came together on one stretch of the A470.
