WestJet Strike Suspends Mainline Flights

WestJet suspended its mainline flight operation after approximately 4,400 flight attendants began strike action early Sunday, canceling more than 300 flights during one of Canada’s busiest summer travel weekends.

Passengers with canceled flights were told not to travel to the airport without a confirmed replacement itinerary. WestJet’s official advisory said Encore services and partner-operated codeshare flights remained outside the mainline shutdown.

Talks Fail Before Deadline

The Canadian Union of Public Employees issued a 72-hour strike notice after negotiations failed to produce a first collective agreement acceptable to cabin crew. WestJet issued a matching lockout notice and began parking aircraft before the deadline.

The parties continued bargaining, but the union began the strike at 12:01 a.m. Mountain Time on August 2. The transition from notice to active job action is important because earlier travel guidance described only a possible disruption.

Unpaid Ground Work Drives Dispute

CUPE says flight attendants perform safety checks, boarding, deplaning and delay-related duties without being paid for every hour from check-in to clock-out. The union argues the existing credit-hour system leaves substantial ground work uncompensated.

WestJet says its rejected proposal would have introduced an hourly rate for time before and after flights alongside a double-digit first-year wage increase. The disagreement is therefore not over whether ground duties exist, but whether the airline’s proposed formula and total compensation adequately value them.

Mainline Network Bears Impact

WestJet’s Boeing 737 and 787 mainline operation is affected. WestJet Encore’s regional Q400 flights and services operated by partner airlines under codeshare arrangements continue, although connections can still fail when one segment is canceled.

The airline’s network normally carries tens of thousands of passengers daily. Cancellations can continue after an agreement because aircraft and crews must be repositioned before the schedule returns to normal.

Refund And Rebooking Options

WestJet said affected customers would be offered refunds or rebooking where alternatives were available. Travelers should use the flight-status and guest-update pages before leaving for the airport.

Whether additional compensation applies depends on the itinerary, operating carrier and relevant passenger-rights law. A labor dispute does not produce one automatic payment for every canceled journey, particularly where the airline provides an acceptable alternative.

Government Has Not Ended Strike

Canada’s jobs minister expressed disappointment that talks failed but had not ended the strike through binding intervention. The union urged the government to allow collective bargaining to continue.

Both sides said they remained open to negotiations. A tentative agreement would still require operational recovery and, depending on union procedure, member approval.

The immediate passenger problem is larger than the cancellation count. Once aircraft are parked and crews displaced, a settlement does not instantly restore a network built around tightly sequenced rotations.
