The investigation into a Ryanair engine failure that shattered a cabin window mid-flight has expanded to three international aviation authorities, even as the airline's own CEO publicly disputes what investigators reportedly suspect caused it.

EASA Joins Widening Probe

Ryanair flight FR1879, operated by subsidiary Malta Air, suffered an apparent uncontained failure of its right engine roughly six minutes after departing Thessaloniki, Greece for Memmingen, Germany on July 10. Debris struck the fuselage and shattered a cabin window at approximately 15,000–16,000 feet over North Macedonia, causing rapid decompression.

EASA appointed a technical advisor to the investigation on July 13, joining North Macedonia's Aircraft Accident and Incident Investigation Committee, which leads the probe as the state where the incident occurred. The NTSB has also appointed an accredited representative, with Boeing and engine manufacturer GE Aerospace/CFM providing technical support.

Investigators And CEO Disagree

Ryanair CEO Michael O'Leary suggested the incident was caused by "foreign object damage" — debris striking the engine from outside. The crew deployed oxygen masks, descended to roughly 6,000 feet, and burned off fuel for about 30 minutes before landing safely back in Thessaloniki, roughly an hour after departure.

Aircraft Impounded, Replacement Sent

The aircraft, registration 9H-QEU and delivered in 2008, was impounded by Greece's Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority pending the investigation. Ryanair arranged a replacement aircraft to complete affected passengers' journeys.

No timeline has been given for when North Macedonia's investigation committee expects to issue preliminary findings, though such international probes involving multiple accredited representatives typically take months before a formal cause is confirmed.
