Mother and Daughter Die Rescuing Boy at Essex Beach

A mother and daughter died trying to rescue a seven-year-old boy who got into difficulty in the sea near a holiday park at West Mersea, Essex, police have confirmed.

Police Confirm Family Relationship

Essex Police said officers were called to Seaview Avenue and the beach area near Sea View Holiday Park at 5.30pm on Wednesday. The force confirmed the woman, 41, and her 15-year-old daughter, both from London, died after entering the water to help the boy.

Detective Chief Inspector Al Pitcher said: "My thoughts, and those of my team, are with the friends and family of the woman and girl who died. We can now confirm they were a mother and daughter from London and we are supporting their family in what is an unimaginable time."

Boy Remains In Critical Condition

The seven-year-old boy remains in hospital in a critical condition. Two further people were treated for non-life-threatening injuries in connection with the same incident.

Police said they believe the mother and daughter had entered the water specifically to help the boy after he got into difficulty, and that officers are continuing to establish the full circumstances that led to the tragedy.

Strong Currents Known Local Hazard

Locals familiar with the beach described the waters around West Mersea as carrying strong currents that can take swimmers by surprise, particularly when offshore winds combine with an outgoing tide.

Emergency response to the scene included ambulances, police vehicles, a fire engine, a lifeboat, two air ambulances, and a coastguard helicopter, though the beach has since reopened to the public.
