BAE Systems’ new Brontanax autonomous combat aircraft is being presented as evidence of Britain’s sovereign aerospace strength, but its initial prototype relies on an American engine after reported talks with Rolls-Royce failed over cost.
The aircraft was designed and assembled at BAE’s Warton site in Lancashire with a supply chain involving more than 75 British companies and smaller suppliers. Its Williams International powerplant is the largest disclosed exception to that domestic industrial story.
Williams Engine Powers Prototype
BAE has not identified the exact Williams engine variant publicly, but specialist aviation reporting confirms that the first aircraft uses a powerplant from the US manufacturer. Williams produces the FJ33 and FJ44 family of compact turbofan engines used across light aircraft.
The prototype is expected to power up later in 2026, begin ground testing during 2027 and make its first flight next year. Changing the engine at this stage would affect intake design, weight, cooling, fuel systems, software and flight-test planning rather than simply replacing one component.
Rolls-Royce Talks Reportedly Failed
Reports citing people familiar with the negotiations say BAE considered Rolls-Royce’s proposed engine too expensive and believed the company had not committed strongly enough to the programme. Neither BAE nor Rolls-Royce has published the commercial terms or independently confirmed that account.
The disagreement should therefore be treated as a reported procurement dispute, not an established finding that one company acted improperly. What can be confirmed is that BAE selected an American engine for the initial aircraft while a suitable British alternative was under development.
Orpheus Targets Drone Market
Rolls-Royce describes Orpheus as a family of affordable, scalable small engines designed for uncrewed aircraft. The company says new manufacturing techniques can shorten development time while providing embedded electrical generation for sensors and mission systems.
Orpheus is strategically relevant beyond Brontanax. A competitive domestic small-engine family could support multiple autonomous-aircraft designs instead of depending on one programme to recover development costs.
That commercial model also helps explain the tension. BAE needs a powerplant that keeps its demonstrator affordable and on schedule; Rolls-Royce must price an immature engine programme around development risk and a market that has not yet reached large production volumes.
Sovereignty Claim Has Limits
BAE calls Brontanax Britain’s first uncrewed collaborative combat aircraft and says it will add electronic-warfare and precision-strike capacity alongside crewed aircraft such as Typhoon. The UK government is investing £300 million through its Storm Fighter programme.
“British-designed” remains accurate because the aircraft and its systems integration were developed in the UK. It does not mean every major component is British-made, and the engine exposes the difference between domestic design authority and complete supply-chain independence.
Later Engine Change Remains Possible
BAE and the Royal Air Force could still introduce an Orpheus-family engine in a later development phase. That would preserve flight-test momentum now while creating a route toward more British content before operational production.
The trade-off is cost. Re-engining after initial flight testing can require further integration work and certification, so a later domestic engine must offer enough performance, affordability or strategic security to justify the transition.
Brontanax is intended to enter service before the end of the decade. Its timetable means supplier choices must be made before every element of Britain’s desired sovereign industrial base is fully mature.

The American engine does not make Brontanax an American aircraft, but it reveals the practical boundary of the UK’s sovereignty claim. Britain controls the airframe design and mission concept while depending on foreign propulsion for the first flying version.
The reported dispute also presents a genuine procurement dilemma: paying more for a domestic engine may strengthen long-term industrial independence, while buying a proven US powerplant protects the near-term flight schedule. The programme cannot maximise sovereignty, speed and cost simultaneously.
