Shelley Davies was already on the ground when Kian Bateman decided to accelerate.

Bateman, 19, was sentenced at Cardiff Crown Court on Friday to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 17 years after deliberately driving his mother's car into Davies, 38, and her partner David Bratcher, 40, outside the 4th Glamorgan Homeguard Club in Caerau at 00:30 BST last September. Davies suffered complications and died in hospital three weeks later.

What Happened That Night

The pair had been attending a music event at the social club when a disagreement broke out involving Bateman's brother and Bratcher.

During the confrontation, Davies ended up on the ground. Bateman, who had been inhaling nitrous oxide earlier that evening, then made what the court described as a "spur of the moment decision" to accelerate toward Bratcher, driving over Davies at around 10mph without seeing her.

Bateman went on to strike Bratcher, throwing him over the bonnet, before abandoning the car and leaving the scene without calling for help.

He handed himself in to police the following day. Jurors cleared him of Bratcher's attempted murder but convicted him of causing grievous bodily harm with intent, and of Davies' murder.

What the Judge Said

Mrs Justice Stacey told Bateman he had used his mother's car "as a weapon" in an attempt to hurt Bratcher, and accepted that he had not intended to hurt Davies but that she was "in the way" of an attack aimed at someone else.

She said no sentence the court could impose would bring Davies back, and that those who knew her had been left "devastated" by the loss of a friend widely described as their family's "rock."

The judge also acknowledged Bateman had shown "very great and genuine remorse," had no previous police record, and had pleaded guilty to causing Davies' death even after being convicted at trial of murder.

A Family Left to Rebuild

Bratcher told the court his children almost lost both parents that night, and that watching CCTV of the attack was the most traumatic experience of his life. Davies' 17-year-old daughter said her mother had been "our rock, our glue," and that the closest thing she now has to a hug is visiting a grave.

The Crown Prosecution Service said Bateman had used a vehicle "as a weapon, with devastating consequence," and that its thoughts remain with the family even as the case concludes.

Bateman will serve 16 years and 109 days for the murder, running concurrently with a five-year term for the injuries to Bratcher, and will not be able to drive again for 21 years and 109 days after his eventual release.
