The father of three sisters who died in the sea off Brighton has described the pain of losing them as “unbearable” as relatives gathered for their funeral.

Jane Adetoro, 36, Christina Walters, 32, and Rebecca Walters, 31, died after being recovered from the sea off Brighton on 13 May.

Their father, Joseph Jacobson, wrote in the funeral order of service that no words could truly describe losing three daughters in the prime of their lives.

Father Pays Tribute at Sisters’ Funeral

Jacobson described his daughters as his joy, strength and the light that filled his life with love.

He wrote that there were moments when the grief felt unbearable, but said he held tightly to the memories, love and bond the family shared.

The funeral was held in north-west London, where relatives gathered to remember the sisters together.

Their remaining sister, Lilian, wrote one of the most painful lines in the service: “We were four, and now I am one.”

The words placed the family’s loss beyond the facts of a police investigation.

They showed the scale of grief now carried by a father and a surviving sister after one morning on the Brighton seafront.

Three Sisters Died Off Brighton

Emergency services were called at about 05:45 BST on 13 May after reports of a person in the water near Black Rock car park on Madeira Drive.

The three women were later recovered from the sea or shoreline.

At an inquest opening at Brighton & Hove Coroner’s Court, senior coroner Penelope Schofield said she hoped the proceedings would help stop social media speculation about how the sisters died.

The causes of death have not yet been confirmed.

Sussex Police has said there is no evidence to suggest third-party involvement or criminality, while its investigation into how the women came to be in the water continues.

That distinction matters for responsible reporting.

The deaths are being investigated, but police have not described them as suspicious.

Police Investigation Still Continuing

Sussex Police has said officers are reviewing large amounts of CCTV and speaking to witnesses as they build a fuller picture of the sisters’ final movements.

The force has also said it is trying to understand who Jane, Christina and Rebecca were as part of the wider inquiry.

That approach reflects the unusual sensitivity of the case.

The public knows where the women were found, but not why they were at the beach that morning or how they came to be in the water.

Police have not released a final account.

The inquest is expected to continue in early October, when more evidence may be heard.

Until then, the confirmed position remains limited: three sisters died, the family has held their funeral, and investigators are still examining the circumstances.

Family Asked to Grieve Without Speculation

The funeral service also remembered the women as people with careers, character and family ties.

A relative said Jane worked as a senior accountant, Christina as a junior accountant, and Rebecca as an HR administrator.

The family tribute described them not as a mystery but as daughters, sisters and women who had built lives.

That is why the coroner’s warning about speculation matters.

Online theories can quickly overtake confirmed facts in cases involving sudden deaths, especially when the circumstances are not yet fully explained.

For the family, the investigation is not a debate thread.

It is the process that must explain the deaths of three women they loved.

The next formal update belongs to the inquest and police inquiry, not to speculation around a tragedy that has already left one family carrying an unbearable loss.
