Body Found in Search for Boy Missing in River

A body has been found during the search for a 15-year-old boy who went missing after getting into difficulty in the River Irwell.
Greater Manchester Police said the discovery was made at Clifton Country Park in Swinton after emergency teams searched the River Irwell.
The boy had last been seen getting into difficulty in the water on Saturday afternoon.

Specialist officers are supporting the boy’s family.

Police Say Death Is Not Suspicious
Detective Inspector Dave Ogden described the incident as “truly heart breaking.”
He said his thoughts remained with the boy’s family and loved ones.
Police said they were satisfied there was nothing suspicious about the death.
That detail is important because it keeps the case within a public-safety and coroner-style context, rather than a criminal investigation.
The next formal step is expected to involve identification and any process required for the coroner.
Police have not released further details about how the boy entered the water or who else was present at the time.

Open Water Warning Follows Search
Police used the update to warn people about the risks of entering rivers, reservoirs, canals and ponds during warm weather.
The warning reflects a familiar danger in summer conditions: open water can look calm from the bank but still carry strong currents, sudden drops, hidden hazards and cold-water shock risk.
Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service’s official water-safety advice tells people to look out for hazards, stick to proper pathways and take warning signs seriously.
The fire service also advises people not to enter the water to rescue others, but to throw something that floats and call emergency services.
That advice is especially important around rivers, where moving water can quickly carry someone away from the point where they entered.

Warm Weather Brings Familiar Risk
The case comes during a period when emergency services have again warned about open water.
Hot weather can make rivers and reservoirs appear inviting, especially to teenagers and young adults looking to cool down.
But air temperature and water temperature do not rise at the same speed.
The National Fire Chiefs Council warns that cold water shock can affect anyone, even confident swimmers, and can cause panic, loss of breathing control and loss of swimming ability.
Police said people should enjoy the weather safely and avoid entering reservoirs, rivers, canals or ponds.
For the boy’s family, the public warning will not soften the loss.
It does, however, explain why emergency services repeat the same message every summer: open water can turn dangerous in seconds, even when the weather makes it look harmless.
