Witnesses Describe Pursuit That Ended With Man in a Lake

A birthday party turned into a front-row seat to a police pursuit's final minutes.
The chase started in Miramar. It ended with a man hiding underwater beneath a dock.
How the Pursuit Started
According to Miramar Police Department officials, officers located a truck of interest in the area of County Line Road and Northwest 69th Avenue.
When officers attempted a traffic stop, the driver did not comply and fled the area instead.
Miramar Police worked with multiple agencies to locate the suspect, including the Florida Highway Patrol, Miami Gardens Police, and the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office.
The vehicle was eventually stopped in Miami Lakes, where the driver got out and attempted to flee on foot.

What the Witnesses Actually Saw
A family in the middle of a birthday party noticed the man jump into a nearby lake.
Jessica Valdes said her mother-in-law spotted the man coming up the stairs near their home and asked him what he was doing โ at which point he ran toward the dock.
He removed a black mask he'd been wearing before grabbing the end of a post and sliding into the water, according to Valdes, who said he was deliberately hiding beneath the dock to avoid being seen.
An officer arrived shortly after and jumped in after him, with the suspect asking repeatedly what he had done as the officer attempted to grab him.

How the Arrest Actually Happened
The suspect didn't stay caught on the first attempt.
Valdes said he climbed back out of the water and tried to flee again, prompting the family to let the pursuing officer run directly through their home to reach the front of the property.
Video captured an officer running through the Valdes family's home in order to cut off the suspect's path.
Valdes said officers eventually caught up to him on the other side of the property and used a Taser to bring him into custody.
What's Been Confirmed Since
According to Miramar Police, the driver has been charged with fleeing and eluding.
The driver's identity had not been released as of late Tuesday evening.
An investigation into the incident remains ongoing, and no further details about what originally drew police attention to the truck have been made public.
Why This One Stuck With the Witnesses
For the Valdes family, the pursuit's final minutes played out in their own backyard, transforming a birthday celebration into the unexpected center of a multi-agency police response.
That a stranger fleeing officers ended up hiding directly beneath their dock, then attempting a second escape through their own property, is the detail that's likely to stay with them well after the formal charges work their way through the legal process.
