Fifa Backs Down on Moving England vs Mexico Kickoff Time

For a few hours on Friday, millions of England fans thought they might get to watch the biggest match of their summer at a reasonable hour. Then Fifa changed its mind back.
England's World Cup last-16 tie against Mexico will kick off as originally scheduled at 01:00 BST on Monday, after football's governing body reversed a Friday proposal to move the match six hours earlier.
The Proposal That Almost Happened
Fifa had opened talks with the English and Mexican football associations on Friday over shifting kickoff to 19:00 BST on Sunday, equivalent to 12:00 local time in Mexico City.
Weather forecasts pointed to possible thunderstorms around the original evening kickoff slot, though Fifa did not publicly explain its reasoning for the proposed change.
Sources told reporters that Fifa had been close to confirming the reschedule in a formal statement before the plan leaked and angered officials on both sides.
The change was first reported by Mexican media, with journalist Gibran Araige later saying Fifa was "backing down" once the pushback began.

Why Both Sides Pushed Back
The Football Association requested time to review the weather forecast in more detail before agreeing to anything.
Officials on both sides raised concerns about player preparation, fan travel logistics, and the practical difficulty of moving a fixture of this size with barely 48 hours' notice.
Separate reporting indicated the original push for an earlier time actually originated with Mexican officials seeking to ease crowd and safety logistics around the match, not purely from Fifa's own weather concerns.
Moving the game would also have forced a second fixture, Brazil vs Norway, to shift its own kickoff time at the same venue.

What the Coaches Said
Mexico manager Javier Aguirre said the proposed change felt like "a kick in the gut," describing how six hours of scheduled training, meals and rest would have been thrown out with almost no notice.
He said he had not been consulted on the proposal at any stage, adding: "Fifa organises, Fifa decides, and I comply."
England winger Marcus Rashford called the situation "not ideal" but said the squad's preparation approach wouldn't change regardless of kickoff time.
Forward Morgan Rogers echoed that sentiment, saying the team would "be ready regardless of the time."

The Altitude and Weather Factor
Estadio Azteca sits 7,220ft (2,240m) above sea level, and Mexico have lost just twice in 89 matches at the stadium.
At that altitude, thinner air means less oxygen reaches the bloodstream with each breath, which can raise heart rate, shorten breath, and speed up fatigue even for elite athletes.
Temperatures at the original evening kickoff are forecast around 20C, compared with roughly 23C had the match moved to midday.
Meteorologists say Sunday's storm risk is unusually high for the time of year, with unstable atmospheric conditions capable of producing frequent lightning and possible hail during the late afternoon and evening.
The UK Angle Nobody Expected
Back in England, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer had already pushed through emergency legislation allowing pubs in England and Wales to stay open until 5am for the original kickoff time.
It remains unclear whether that extended license would have been reversed had the earlier Sunday slot gone ahead.
England head coach Thomas Tuchel had urged parents to let children stay up for the match, telling them to "write an excuse for school" the next day, a suggestion the government responded to by saying it's "up to parents to make their own decisions."
More than 3,000 England fans are expected inside the 87,000-capacity Azteca for the match, many of whom had already locked in non-refundable travel plans built around the original kickoff time.
