California voters headed to the polls on June 2, 2026 for one of the most closely watched primary elections in the country — and the results are making waves across the political landscape.
Governor's Race: Hilton and Becerra Lead
In the race to replace term-limited Governor Gavin Newsom, Republican commentator Steve Hilton and Democrat Xavier Becerra emerged as the early frontrunners, with the two candidates running neck and neck as ballots continued to be counted overnight.
Tom Steyer, the billionaire Democrat who poured significant personal funds into his campaign, trailed in third place. Steyer told supporters he would "wait until every ballot is counted" before making any announcements — a sign the race remains competitive.
Notable concessions came swiftly. Antonio Villaraigosa, the former Los Angeles mayor who was considered a major Democratic contender, conceded the governor's race. Katie Porter, the progressive congresswoman who gained national attention as a sharp-tongued consumer advocate, also conceded — dealing a blow to the progressive wing of the California Democratic Party.
Matt Mahan, the San Jose mayor, similarly stepped aside after early results failed to break his way.
Los Angeles Mayor: Karen Bass Advances
In the Los Angeles mayoral race, incumbent Mayor Karen Bass took an early lead with 37% of the vote. With just under 50% of expected ballots counted, ABC News projected Bass would advance to the November runoff election.
In a stunning development, reality TV personality Spencer Pratt — known from The Hills — sat in second place with approximately 30% of the vote, setting up what could be one of the most unusual runoff matchups in LA political history. Nithya Raman trailed behind in third.
Nancy Pelosi's Seat: Wiener Advances
In the congressional race for the seat vacated by former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, California State Senator Scott Wiener advanced to the general election — a significant win for the progressive Democrat who has been one of the most prominent voices on housing and tech policy in Sacramento.
What Happens Next
California uses a top-two primary system, meaning the two candidates with the most votes in each race — regardless of party — advance to the November 3, 2026 general election. That means it is entirely possible for two Democrats or two Republicans to face off in the fall.
All eyes will now turn to November as the full picture of California's political direction becomes clear.
