Aventura Mall wallet theft investigation after two suspects arrested.

Police say a shopper’s wallet was taken inside an Aventura Mall elevator before stolen cards were used for thousands of dollars in purchases.

Two men have been arrested after investigators said they distracted a shopper at Aventura Mall, stole her wallet and used her credit cards for fraudulent purchases.

Santiago Sabino Duron, 55, and Orlando Julio Torres, 55, are accused of taking the wallet after the victim entered an elevator near Macy’s on June 14.

Aventura Mall Theft Started Inside Elevator

Police said the victim entered the elevator with both suspects before the theft happened.

Investigators said Duron distracted the woman while Torres removed the wallet from her purse without her noticing.

The report describes a method often seen in crowded retail settings: one person creates the distraction while another moves close enough to take property before the victim realizes anything is missing.

The victim later reported that her Michael Kors wallet, about $675 in cash, credit cards and personal identification documents were gone.

Police have not said whether any additional shoppers reported similar thefts at the mall.

Stolen Cards Used at Apple Store and Target

Investigators said the stolen cards were later used for a $3,421.86 purchase at the Apple Store inside Aventura Mall.

Police said another $962.99 purchase was made at a Target in North Miami.

Other fraudulent transactions were also reported, though the full amount was not detailed in the pasted account.

The purchases are a key part of the case because they moved the incident from a wallet theft into alleged credit-card fraud and identity-related charges.

Both men are facing charges that include grand theft, fraudulent use of a credit card, fraudulent use of personal identification information and criminal solicitation.

Those are allegations at this stage.

License Plate Reader Led Police Back to Mall

Investigators arrested both men Sunday after a license plate reader alerted officers that Torres’ vehicle had entered Aventura Mall.

That detail gives the case a second layer beyond the elevator allegation.

Police were not only responding to a victim’s report; they were also using vehicle-tracking technology tied to the mall area to locate a suspect vehicle after the incident.

License plate readers are increasingly common around shopping centers, highways and city streets, where they can help officers identify vehicles linked to open investigations.

In this case, police said the alert came when the vehicle entered the same mall where the theft had allegedly happened.

Court Appearance Comes After Felony Booking

Duron and Torres were booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.

They were scheduled to appear in court Monday morning.

No plea, bond decision or attorney statement was included in the initial account.

The next court update will determine whether prosecutors move forward on all listed charges and whether additional evidence from store purchases, surveillance footage or card records becomes part of the case.

For shoppers, the report shows how quickly a brief elevator encounter can become a financial crime investigation.

For police, the next question is whether the mall arrest closes one case or opens a wider review of other theft reports tied to the same pattern.
