Vin Diesel has spent nearly four years teasing this moment. This week, he says it's finally real.

Diesel posted a behind-the-scenes Instagram video on Independence Day claiming production has begun on "Fast Forever," the eleventh and final mainline installment in the Fast & Furious franchise, set for release on 17 March 2028.

What Diesel Actually Said

"I'm on set. People are grinding. Incredible crews are working," Diesel said in the clip, shot in what appears to be a garage setting with a black muscle car visible behind him.

He thanked fans for their patience "over the past three and a half years," while the team worked "to try to make the most amazing finale."

Diesel added that he's "been lucky to embark on other characters" during the wait, referencing his upcoming role in "Riddick: Furya" and his work developing a "Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots" film for Mattel.

Why Some Industry Watchers Aren't Convinced

Not everyone is taking the announcement at face value. Industry commentary from World of Reel argued there's "almost no chance" full production is genuinely underway on a weekend, suggesting the video more likely shows prep work rather than active filming.

That skepticism follows a well-documented pattern: the film has been delayed repeatedly since development began in 2020, and previous production updates from Diesel have not always translated into confirmed shoot dates.

Deadline and other outlets have reported the update as production genuinely starting, meaning there's a real split between how the trade press and independent film commentators are characterizing the same video.

The Story Fast Forever Picks Up

Fast X ended on a cliffhanger in 2023, with Jason Momoa's villain Dante still alive, Dom's brother Jakob sacrificing himself, and Dom's son Little B being carried off in the chaos of a dam explosion.

Louis Leterrier returns to direct, having also helmed Fast X, and the film is expected to bring the story back to Los Angeles, where the franchise began 25 years ago in 2001.

Diesel has suggested the finale will lean back into practical car-racing action after the more CGI-heavy set pieces of recent installments.

Who's Expected to Return

Long-time cast members including Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris and Sung Kang are expected to feature, based on the franchise's own promotional pattern for finale entries.

Dwayne Johnson's Hobbs and Gal Gadot's Gisele both made surprise reappearances in Fast X's mid-credits scene, opening the door for larger roles in the finale.

The franchise has grossed more than $7 billion globally since its 2001 debut, making Fast Forever's outcome a genuinely significant test of whether the series can close out on its own terms after years of scheduling turbulence.
