A 35-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder after a knife incident on a busy Swansea street Friday morning.

Bokan Qadiri, of the Blaenymaes area of the city, faces three charges: attempted murder, making threats to kill, and possession of an offensive weapon in a public place.

How the Incident Unfolded

South Wales Police were called to St Helen's Road in the Sandfields area at around 11:40am on Friday, June 19, following a report of a man armed with a knife attempting to attack another man.

According to Swansea Bay News, the incident happened outside the city's YMCA, prompting a road closure between the Kingsway roundabout and Nicholl Street while emergency crews responded.

A cordon was put in place at the junction with Page Street, and officers in armed-response gear were seen at the scene before it was confirmed the situation had been contained.

A 38-year-old man was taken to hospital for treatment of his injuries.

From Arrest to Formal Charge

Qadiri was initially arrested on suspicion of Section 18 wounding with intent, the lesser charge typically applied at the scene before a full case review.

By Sunday, that had escalated. South Wales Police confirmed the upgraded charges โ€” attempted murder, threats to kill, and possession of an offensive weapon โ€” following further investigation into the incident.

He has been remanded into custody and is due to appear at Swansea Magistrates' Court on Monday morning.

What Police Have Said About the Risk to the Public

A spokesperson for South Wales Police said both men involved "are known to each other," and that the incident is being treated as isolated.

"We are not seeking anyone else in connection with this matter," the force said, adding that there is "no wider risk to the public."

That distinction matters in a city centre location like St Helen's Road, where a knife incident outside a public building like the YMCA could otherwise prompt broader community concern.

Police said they recognise "incidents like this can be concerning for our communities," and stressed the attack was not random.

What Happens Next

Qadiri's first court appearance Monday will determine whether the case is sent to Crown Court, standard procedure for a charge as serious as attempted murder.

The condition of the 38-year-old victim has not been publicly updated since he was taken to hospital Friday, and South Wales Police has not said whether further charges remain possible.
