Eighteen months ago, Roman Safiullin didn't know if he'd ever play tennis at this level again. On Sunday, he took a set off Novak Djokovic on Centre Court.

Safiullin, ranked No. 132 in the world, pushed the seven-time Wimbledon champion to a first-set tiebreak in their fourth-round clash, with Djokovic eventually sealing it 8-6 after a tense back-and-forth battle.

How Safiullin Got Here

Safiullin missed out on direct entry into the Wimbledon main draw and had to fight through qualifying just to reach the tournament.

He then reeled off wins over Andrey Rublev in a five-set opener, Botic van de Zandschulp, and 24th seed Joao Fonseca, beating the young Brazilian 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 to set up the Djokovic clash.

That victory over Fonseca marked six wins in a row heading into Sunday, powering the qualifier into his second career Wimbledon fourth round.

The Injury That Nearly Ended His Season

A serious hip injury sustained after the 2025 US Open kept Safiullin out of action for several months before he returned to the tour in February.

"Even let's say half a year ago I didn't know if I will be able to play back," Safiullin said after beating Fonseca, breaking down in tears during the on-court interview.

He rebuilt his ranking by winning two Challenger-level clay-court titles, climbing back into the world's top 200 after briefly dropping outside it.

What Happened in the First Set

The opening set went the distance, with both players trading momentum before it reached a tiebreak.

Safiullin surged to a 3-1 lead in the tiebreak with a smash and a blasted forehand winner, only for Djokovic to claw his way back level.

Safiullin saved a set point with a composed rally, but Djokovic converted his third opportunity to take the tiebreak 8-6 and the opening set 7-6.

Why This Match Matters Beyond the Result

This was the first-ever Grand Slam meeting between the two players, giving Safiullin a genuine test against a career head-to-head he'd never faced before.

Djokovic entered the tournament chasing a record-extending 19th Wimbledon quarterfinal appearance and had dropped just two sets across his first three rounds.

Even in defeat, reaching this stage represents Safiullin's best Wimbledon result since his run to the quarterfinals in 2023, before the injury derailed nearly a year of his career.
