Netherlands celebrates a 5-1 World Cup win over Sweden, with Brian Brobbey and Cody Gakpo each scoring two goals at Houston Stadium.

Brian Brobbey scored twice in the opening 17 minutes. Cody Gakpo matched him with two more in the second half.

Netherlands didn't just beat Sweden on Saturday — they put up a number that hasn't been touched in nearly two decades.

The Fastest Start Few Saw Coming

Manager Ronald Koeman made a surprise call, starting Brobbey ahead of Crysencio Summerville, who had scored in the Dutch side's opening 2-2 draw with Japan.

The decision paid off almost immediately.

According to Yahoo Sports, Brobbey opened the scoring in the 5th minute, finishing a move that began with his own pass to Tijjani Reijnders, who found Gakpo on the left before Gakpo's cross set up the simple finish.

Twelve minutes later, Brobbey doubled his tally, losing his marker to tap home a Denzel Dumfries cross.

Opta confirmed the two goals — 16 minutes and 12 seconds apart — made Brobbey's brace the fourth-fastest to open a World Cup match since 1986, behind only Lukas Podolski, Ronaldo Nazário, and Gary Lineker.

The Goal Sweden Thought They'd Scored

Sweden's best chance to get back into the contest before halftime came and went.

According to ESPN, Gustaf Lagerbielke headed in a Benjamin Nygren free kick late in the first half, only for the goal to be ruled out — several Swedish players were caught offside in the buildup.

It was the closest Sweden came to disrupting the Dutch control of the match before the break.

Gakpo Takes Over After the Break

Koeman made one change at halftime, sending on Summerville for Donyell Malen — a substitution that immediately changed the game's rhythm.

Two minutes into the second half, Summerville's low cross found Gakpo, who prodded home from close range to make it 3-0.

Al Jazeera reported that Gakpo struck again seven minutes later, turning inside his defender before finishing low into the bottom corner to complete his own brace and put Netherlands 4-0 ahead.

Sweden finally got on the board in the 59th minute, when Anthony Elanga ran onto an Alexander Isak through ball and beat goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen.

The Stats Behind a One-Sided Scoreline

The shot count tells a story almost as lopsided as the final score, just reversed.

Sweden actually out-shot Netherlands by nearly two to one and held more total shots on target, yet conceded five goals to one.

That gap between the underlying numbers and the scoreline reflects a match where Dutch finishing efficiency, not territorial control, decided the outcome — Netherlands scored five times from just seven shots on target, a conversion rate Sweden could not have matched even with their additional volume of attempts.

Summerville added a sixth-minute equivalent of style points in the 89th minute, finishing from the edge of the box after a Memphis Depay assist to make the final score 5-1.

Sweden picked up three yellow cards in the second half — Gabriel Gudmundsson in the 53rd minute, Yasin Ayari in the 75th, and Lucas Bergvall in the 80th — as frustration mounted against a Dutch side that never lost control of the match.

What the Result Means for Group F

The win sends Netherlands top of Group F with four points from two matches, ahead of Sweden on three.

ESPN reported Koeman said afterward that the manner of the win could help build the team's confidence heading into the rest of the tournament, acknowledging the pressure that had built following the opening draw with Japan.

Sweden, who had themselves beaten Tunisia 5-1 in their own opener, remain well-placed to advance despite the heavy loss — their three points keep them clear of both Japan and Tunisia in the group.

Japan and Tunisia were scheduled to play later the same day in Monterrey, a result that would further clarify the group's final shape heading into the last round of matches.
