Two people, including a police officer, were killed Monday in a shooting in Montreal, police in the Canadian city said. The gunman was also killed.

There was no immediate word on the motive of the attack, which took place in an area of the Côte-des-Neiges neighborhood that has kosher restaurants and supermarkets frequented by Montreal's large Jewish community. The area includes a supermarket, shops and a residential building.

"It is with immense sadness that we confirm the death of one of our police officers in the line of duty," Montreal police said in a statement posted on X. Police separately announced that a civilian and the suspect had been killed, while also urging residents to avoid the area.

Officer identified

The officer was later identified as Mohamed Lamine Benredouane, 34. He had been with the Montreal Police Service since 2021, the police said.

Fady Dagher, chief of the Montreal Police Service, told reporters he was a "great, great, great police officer" who was "very passionate." "It's a very, very sad day. It's a nightmare," Dagher said.

Dagher added this was the first time SPVM had lost an officer in the line of duty since 2002. The loss marks 24 years without a line-of-duty death for Montreal police.

Shooting timeline

Police said the incident began around 11:30 a.m. ET. Police swarmed the apparent scene of the shooting and a police helicopter flew overhead.

Dagher told reporters he didn't know the identity of the civilian who was killed or if they were Jewish. Dagher also could not confirm who killed the civilian.

"Dagher said the suspect was 'shot right away. But the other person, I don't have the details yet.'" Public broadcaster Radio Canada said another officer was seriously wounded.

"We are all behind her," Dagher said of the injured officer during a Monday afternoon news conference. USA Today confirmed a second officer wounded is a woman and is in stable condition.

Scene in Côte-des-Neiges

The shooting began around 11:35 AM near Courtrai and Trans Island avenues in Côte-des-Neiges. Witnesses reported hearing 10 to 12 rapid-fire shots in a row.

The gunman was seen firing down from upper floors into ground-floor commercial businesses. Police responded and a crossfire ensued, with the apparent assailant firing from inside a building with a long gun.

Dagher said there was no ongoing threat and the community was safe. He said he didn't have details on the possibility that the shooter or someone else called 911 to lure police officers into an ambush.

"I don't think it was police target, but maybe we'll see what the investigation would tell us," he said. CNN sources said the shooting appeared to target police.

Manifesto and motive

Police are examining a so-called manifesto that runs over 100 pages they believe may have been written by the gunman. It reportedly espouses incel ideology, according to law enforcement sources.

Authorities have denied terrorism ties, though the motive was linked to an incel subculture. The incident occurred near the headquarters of Pornhub's owner, Aylo, according to Wikipedia summary.

The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA), a prominent Canadian civil society group, said it was "closely monitoring the situation." "As we await more details about the nature of this horrifying incident, we urge community members to exercise vigilance," CIJA said.

Officials respond

Quebec Premier Christine Frechette said she was "deeply shaken by the tragic events." "It is essential to allow the authorities to do their work and to avoid speculation," Frechette added.

Montreal Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada expressed condolences following the death of the officer. "My sincere condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the police officer killed on duty in Côte-des-Neiges," she wrote on X.

Police confirmed the suspect had been "neutralized" after two officers and a civilian were injured. Police later confirmed that one officer, one civilian and the suspect had died.

Victims confirmed

Three people, including a Montreal police officer, were killed in the Côte-des-Neiges shooting. A second officer is in critical condition.

The tragic shooting on Monday, June 22, 2026, concluded with three confirmed fatalities, including the first Montreal police officer killed in the line of duty in 24 years, and the shooter being neutralised by responding officers.

Authorities have not yet publicly identified the civilian victim or the suspect in Monday's shooting. Some reports identified the civilian as Jewish community member Michael Moshe Mizrahi, a ZAKA volunteer.
