Pensioner Convicted of Murdering Neighbour Over Noise Row

A 67-year-old man has been convicted of murdering his neighbour following a confrontation over noise complaints on Christmas Day last year.
A recording device Hughes wore around his own neck became central evidence against him.
What the Court Was Told
James Hughes, of The Old Palace Flats in St Asaph, was found guilty at Caernarfon Crown Court of murdering Harold Turner, 68, after sitting on top of him and beating him with a walking stick during a confrontation outside their flats.
The two men had a long-running dispute over noise, with Turner reportedly planning to move into temporary accommodation to escape Hughes repeatedly banging on the wall with his walking stick. The confrontation on December 25 began after Turner complained again about the noise.
Turner died as a result of asphyxia and blunt force trauma, a postmortem examination found. Hughes denied both murder and manslaughter.

The Recording That Became the Case Against Him
Hughes had been wearing a dictaphone around his neck during the altercation, and the device kept recording well after the confrontation ended.
The recording captured Turner telling Hughes he couldn't breathe and asking him to get off, with Hughes dismissing the pleas. After the incident, Hughes returned to his flat, turned on the radio, and made himself a drink, still being recorded throughout.
In a later phone call to his nephew, still picked up by the same device, Hughes described the injuries he had caused and acknowledged he might face a murder charge, while expressing indifference toward Turner's condition. When he eventually called for an ambulance, Hughes gave a different account, suggesting Turner had suffered a medical episode and fallen.
What the Postmortem Found
The physical evidence ultimately contradicted the version Hughes gave when calling for help.
A postmortem examination confirmed Turner died of asphyxia, with blunt force trauma to his face and head consistent with being struck rather than falling.
That distinction between what Hughes told emergency responders and what he had separately admitted on his own recording became a central thread of the prosecution's case at trial.
What Happens Next
Hughes was found guilty of murder at Caernarfon Crown Court and will be sentenced at a future date.
