Uber Driver Charged Over Teen He Met on a Grocery Delivery

A missing-child report led investigators somewhere they didn't expect: back to the man who had delivered groceries to the girl's home.
Jermaine Trevor McDaniel, 33, a Houston Uber driver, now faces two felony charges after investigators say he maintained contact with a teenage girl he met while working a delivery.
How the Case Came Together
The investigation began after the girl was reported missing in November 2025, with investigators saying she left home with McDaniel after he had delivered groceries to her residence as an Uber driver.
According to Harris County court records, the girl's mother located McDaniel's Instagram account after her daughter disappeared and passed the information to investigators, who then identified him through law enforcement databases.
Court documents allege the two communicated through Instagram both before and after their encounters, and investigators later obtained Uber records, search warrants and social media records as the case developed.
The girl was reported missing a second time later that month, with investigators believing she had again left with McDaniel.
Court records state that even after she returned home, McDaniel continued sending her messages for several weeks without a response.
The Charges He's Facing
McDaniel was charged on 8 June with sexual assault of a child and promotion of child pornography, according to court records.
Prosecutors allege the offences occurred on multiple occasions, and investigators say material was recovered during the investigation supporting the child pornography charge.
He remains in the Harris County Jail on bonds totalling $200,000, with his next court appearance scheduled for 10 August.
What Uber Has Said
An Uber spokesperson told local reporters the company has permanently removed McDaniel from its platform and is cooperating with investigators.
"We are deeply disturbed by this driver's reported behavior," the spokesperson said, adding the company has "banned him from the app and stand ready to support law enforcement."
Why This Case Fits a Bigger Pattern
This isn't an isolated Houston-area case. Federal prosecutors launched Operation Lighthouse earlier this year specifically to target rideshare drivers accused of sexually assaulting passengers, after four Houston-area men were federally indicted on kidnapping charges tied to separate assault allegations.
US Attorney Nicholas Ganjei said at the time that drivers who abuse their position "cease being providers and become predators," warning that federal kidnapping charges could carry life sentences.
The FBI has said it believes more victims may exist beyond the cases already charged, and has urged anyone assaulted by a rideshare driver in the Houston area to come forward.
McDaniel's case differs from those federal cases in that his alleged victim was a minor he met outside a typical ride, but it adds to a documented pattern of rideshare-linked cases the Houston area has seen in the past year.
