If you own a 2018-2022 Ford Expedition or Lincoln Navigator, pay attention. Ford Motor Company has issued a safety recall covering nearly 420,000 vehicles after discovering that seat belts in certain models may inadvertently lock — potentially failing to restrain occupants in a crash.

The recall, assigned NHTSA number 26S34, was reported on May 27, 2026. Owner notification letters will begin arriving by June 8, 2026. Ford and Lincoln dealers will inspect affected vehicles and replace the seat belt retractors at no cost to owners.

What's the Problem?

The seat belt pretensioner in the driver and/or front passenger seat may inadvertently lock the seat belt. When locked, the belt will not extend or retract correctly — meaning a belt that appears to be properly fastened may not function as designed in a crash.

"Seat belts that do not retract or extend can fail to restrain an occupant as intended, increasing the risk of injury in a crash," the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) warned in its notice. Ford has confirmed it is aware of one injury linked to the defect.

Vehicles affected by recall 26S34:

  • 2018–2022 Ford Expedition
  • 2018–2022 Lincoln Navigator

Second Recall: Ford Issues "Do Not Drive" Warning

In a separate — and more serious — recall, Ford issued a "Do Not Drive" warning for 4,653 Ford Maverick and Bronco Sport vehicles under recall number 26S36.

The front lower control arm ball joints in these vehicles may have been incorrectly installed or incorrectly repaired at the assembly plant. A disconnected control arm can cause the driver to lose control of the vehicle — making this a critical safety issue.

Do Not Drive warning affects:

  • 2021–2026 Ford Bronco Sport
  • 2022–2026 Ford Maverick

Owners of these vehicles are advised not to drive them until the ball joints have been inspected and repaired. Ford will cover all repair costs.

Ford's Recall Problem in 2026

This latest recall is part of a much bigger story. Ford has now recalled over 9.8 million vehicles in 2026 alone across 40+ individual recall orders — and is on pace to exceed its own record from 2025, when it issued 152 safety recalls covering more than 24 million vehicles, the most of any automaker in history.

Ford's largest 2026 recall covers 4.4 million trucks and SUVs including the F-150, Expedition, Maverick, Ranger, and Lincoln Navigator over a towing software bug that could cause trailer brakes and indicators to stop working.
