A 16-year-old boy is fighting for his life after being shot on a residential Birmingham street Wednesday evening.

West Midlands Police said the shooting happened just before 5:30pm on Bowyer Road in Alum Rock. The boy was taken to hospital with what officers described as "potentially life-threatening" gunshot injuries.

What Police Have Confirmed

Investigators remained at the scene following the shooting, and West Midlands Police said the incident occurred near a mosque, but stressed there is currently no indication the shooting is connected to the place of worship.

"We understand this is extremely worrying for people in the area, and local officers will be remaining there to speak to anyone with concerns," police said in a statement.

An Ongoing Investigation

No arrests have been announced, and police have not released further details about a possible motive or suspect. Officers are continuing to canvass the Alum Rock area as part of the investigation.
